SUMMARY OF 1100 PM EDT...0300 UTC...INFORMATION ----------------------------------------------- LOCATION...34.8N 70.3W ABOUT 360 MI...580 KM WNW OF BERMUDA MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...85 MPH...140 KM/H PRESENT MOVEMENT...NE OR 35 DEGREES AT 15 MPH...24 KM/H MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...979 MB...28.91 INCHES WATCHES AND WARNINGS -------------------- There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 1100 PM EDT (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Gert was located near latitude 34.8 North, longitude 70.3 West. Gert is moving toward the northeast near 15 mph (24 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue with a significant increase in forward speed during the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is possible tonight and Wednesday. After that, Gert is expected to weaken, with the cyclone becoming an extratropical low by Thursday night. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 979 mb (28.91 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Gert will spread northward along the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward to Long Island during the next couple of days, with the first impacts expected tonight. Swells are also expected to affect Bermuda during the next couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
